1262739 Sociocultural Perspective of Communication Accommodation in Chinese and American Intercultural Communication

AbstractThe intercultural communication between Chinese and Americans has experienced significant development owing to the sociocultural development of the two entities and effective interactions between the two cultures. Great effort has been made and progress been achieved of the intercultural communication in recent years as the two entities become more and more influential and each has been developing well. Some new traits have evolved and worth studying.  Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) is applied to analyze the sociocultural perspective of Chinese and American intercultural communication. CAT makes language and social interaction of communication on either interpersonal or intergroup communication one of its focus. The convergence and divergence analyses are also applicable in the problem under discussion. The major characteristics of intercultural communication between Chinese and Americans have maintained, whereas some new characteristics emerge as relevant involved elements change. There have been more channels of intercultural communication between the two cultures. The interaction has become more and more dynamic and in depth. The people of the two cultures have stronger motivation to know about each other; especially the Americans have stronger motivation of it than in the past. China’s development makes Chinese language and culture more widely acknowledged and accepted in the intercultural communication and some Chinese expressions have been accepted and widely acknowledged by the Americans; etc.
