In
what direction is comparative literature expanding today? Translation in
traditional sense has led to the expansion of literature beyond the boundaries
of nations and native languages. Translation of today involves adaptation
between literatures and among different media, and broadens the scope of
discourse dramatically. However, this does not mean that the expansion of
literariness is less important. Translation studies should deal with the
interrelation of various languages between literatures, media, and cultures,
since both the multi-linguality and multi-mediality have contributed to
improving the literacy of the general public. Under these circumstances this
panel discusses not only individual texts and writers, but also their cultural
meanings that are produced beyond old boundaries. This session examines various
traces of transformation in the course of translation and adaptation to
historicize and theorize such interpretations.
