HOMAGE TO THE FORGOTTEN
This paper aims to show how it is possible to be a household name in one's own lifetime, a major influence upon canonical writers, a coiner of additions to colloquial vocabulary that last two centuries, the inventor of one major modern genre and a contributor to the birth of several others, and yet be shrouded in literary oblivion after one's passing. This 19th century English writer had an effect upon letters out of all proportion to his own relatively minor talent and the forms to which he contributed have broken out of the mould of English and become not just international within the global village but truly neutral.
